Off and Running: One Down, Three Years of Renewal Ahead

One year ago, the future of Mountainview Pool was uncertain.

Deck and building flooding issues, questions about structural integrity, and growing concerns about long-term viability led some in the community to wonder whether the pool and the building had reached the end of their service lives. It was a moment that required careful stewardship, not quick conclusions.

When the current Board took office in March 2025, we committed to getting the facts before making decisions. Independent assessments helped clarify what was actually happening. What we learned was reassuring. The pool itself was structurally sound. The flooding wasn't a mysterious engineering failure, but a root ball clogging the deck drain. The Mountainview pool and building didn’t need to be demolished. They needed thoughtful maintenance.

Last summer, staff cleared the blocked drain, and the flooding stopped. That success allowed the Board to move forward with confidence. In the fall, work began on the pool liner and the surrounding pool edge, an investment in extending the life of an amenity many families enjoy.

As is often the case with facilities, the project revealed a few surprises. Contractors discovered three old liner layers instead of the expected two, all of which had to be removed to meet safety and industry standards. The coping bricks lining the pool edge also showed significant deterioration. Years of exposure to chlorinated water and Pacific Northwest weather had caused mortar and grout to fail. Roughly 80 percent of the bricks were loose or crumbling.

Rather than rush to completion, the Board and staff agreed that doing the work correctly mattered more than doing it quickly. Together, the Board, staff, and committees shared a commitment to investing in long-term solutions. The failing bricks were replaced with new pre-molded, 24-inch concrete bricks designed for durability and safety. While the additional work extended the project timeline, it will also ensure the pool will serve the community for years to come.

Projects like this depend on many people working together. The Board extends sincere thanks to Krisco Pools for their craftsmanship, communication, and flexibility when unexpected conditions emerged. We are especially grateful to Community Director Chris Siler and to Steve, Seth, Maggie, and Bobby on our HOA staff for their steady, behind-the-scenes work that kept this complex project moving forward. We also thank the Sports and Recreation Committee and the Renew Klahanie Committee for their guidance and support throughout the process.

Most of all, we thank our residents for their patience. Closing the pool meant sharing lane time with local high school swim teams and the Issaquah Swim team, and adjusting schedules that were not always convenient. Your flexibility made this work possible.

Three Years of Renewal

Mountainview is just the beginning. Through the Renew Klahanie initiative, the Board is focused on a thoughtful, multi-year approach to maintaining and improving our shared amenities.

Here's what's ahead through the Renew Klahanie initiative:

·      September 2026: Mountainview Pool Building renovation

·      Early 2027: Lakeside Pool Building renovation

·      Late 2027: Lakeside Pool deck rebuild and pool relining

·      Early 2028: HOA Office improvements

At the same time, we are assessing next steps for the dock, completing monument sign projects, and evaluating courts, trails, and playgrounds. Timelines may adjust based on resident usage, weather, and permitting. Our direction is clear.

A year ago, we had many questions. Today, we have answers, plans, and momentum. This progress is possible because the Board, staff, and homeowners are working together to care for the community we all share and the place we call home.
